Grounded TV was fortunate to sit down with  Boots from The Coup and Souls of Mischief last weekend.  We took this time to talk to them about the killing of Oscar Grant last new years in Oakland California at the hands of a police officer while held down by two other officers.

Born and raised in New York City, Powell graduated with an AA in Liberal Arts from LaGuardia C.C. and a B.S. in Physical Education from Hunter College. His work has been published in The New York Times, the New York Post, the Daily News, The Village Voice, Time, Newsweek, VIBE, The Source, Rolling Stone, and many other publications. He currently lives and works in the West Village.

Powell first fell into photography in 1985, at around the same time he connected with the up and coming Beastie Boys. At first he just hung out with them and went to a few of their gigs. Then when he heard they had gone to perform in Florida with Run DMC for the Raising Hell tour, Powell quit his job as a Frozade vendor and joined them on the tour bus. He shot a few photographs that became significant and was subsequently brought along on the License to Ill tour in ‘87 and Together Forever tour with Run DMC and then ‘92 Check Your Head tour and the ‘94 Lollapalooza. Ricky became known as Def Jam’s unofficial chronicler and famously as the alleged fourth Beastie Boy during the group’s Licensed to Ill and Paul’s Boutique era.

The original Rappin’ with the Rickster aired from 1990-1996, Powell interviewed numerous stars on the show including: Russell Simmons, Doug E Fresh, Harold Hunter, Kool Keith, Rahzel, Laurence Fishburne, and Cypress Hill.

Brought to you by Wondercafe.ca and First United Church, the Paint Your Faith project  hit the city of Vancouver with a 13’ x 130’ mural at 55-57 W. Hastings Street, across from the Woodwards Building.

This time around, the four internationally acclaimed aerosol artists worked as a collective to express their unique and unified interpretation of faith will be Faith47 from South Africa, Titi Freak from Brazil, Peeta from Italy and Vancouver’s own Indigo. For seven days, these artists took a blank wall and turned it into their own personal canvas, creating a piece of art that will changed the Vancouver landscape and open discourse for what faith, spirituality and art is really about.

Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings With Special Guests The Heavy & DJ She
LIve in Vancouver at The Commodore Ballroom Sunday June 20th, 2010.
Tickets Available here.
On April 6th, 2010, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will mark history with ther fourth album I Learned the Hard Way. Produced by Bosco Mann and recorded in its entirety on an old Ampex eight-track tape machine by Gabriel Roth in Daptone Records’ House of Soul studios, the record drips with a warmth and spontaneity rarely found since the golden days of Muscle Shoals and Stax Records.  Sharon’s voice, never stronger, evokes at once the raw power of Tina Turner, the moaning soulfulness of Mavis Staples, the rhythmic swagger of James Brown, and the melodic command of Aretha. From the lush Philly-soul fanfare that ushers in “The Game Gets Old” at the top of the record, to the stripped down Sam Cooke style “Mama Don¹t Like My Man” at the tail, the band dances seamlessly through both the most crafted and simple arrangements with subtlety and discipline.  This is the “Daptone Sound” at its finest and is a welcome breath of fresh air. But most of all, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings’ I Learned the Hard Way is a celebration of, and a testament to, the soulful and beautiful possibilities of music.
